"The Mensch"

Released March, 2021

This barrel pick is a tribute to Julian Edelman and is called "The Mensch". It is a barrel of MGP bourbon with a mash bill of 95% corn and 5% malted barley that will be bottled by Good Times. It is really special and unique because it was originally barreled on April 16, 2013 (my birthday) and aged for 7 years, 10 months in a char #5 barrel (heavy char) as part of MGP's experimental series. It was then dumped from the original barrel into a barrel that previously held wildflower honey from a honey farm in Texas on February 24th, 2021.

Tasting Notes:

Color: Dark amber. Note is made that this one is not turbid like some prior honey products have looked.

Nose: Brown sugar, dark cherry and a hint of lime (kind of like kaffir lime)

Palate: Comes in strong with cinnamon, barrel char and the dark cherry notes from the nose. The mid-palate showcases buttery toast and gingerbread. The back of the palate is more nuanced with suggestion of poached pears and baking spices.

Finish: This is an interesting experience. It’s carried early by the more dominant notes of the palate — brown sugar and cinnamon — but this fades fairly quickly, leaving a long-lasting saccharine sweetness.
